SCOOPS of Summer Fun!

We think Ice Cream should be enjoyed throughout the year, but we know children really love it in the summer! Here are many new and creative activities to use with children of all ages that have a fun ice cream theme!
1. Puffy Paint Ice Cream - Tactile Craft
This Ice Cream Puffy Paint Craft is designed to promote the following essential skills:
Fine Motor Skills
- Strengthening through squeezing the glue container and pressing the shaving cream dispenser
- Dexterity - manipulating materials and tools
- Bilateral Coordination-smoothly using both hands for mixing, cutting, pouring, hole punch use, etc.
Scissor Skills - Cutting Around Curves and Corners
- Cutting with scissors involves the skill of hand separation, fine motor coordination, bilateral coordination, and eye-hand coordination.
Visual Perception Skills- Arranging Parts into a Whole
- Spatial Relations to properly perceive ice cream parts relative to oneself and in relation to each other.
Sensory Processing Skills - Puffy Paint
- This activity allows a child the opportunity to explore and create with their fingers!
- The sensory skills addressed in this summer craft include:
- Tactile- offers a variety of touch experiences
- Proprioception- adjusting pressure to allow for firm or light touch as needed
Other skills addressed in this activity include:
- Following verbal and written directions to follow a recipe
Materials Needed:
- Ice Cream template (find resource here!)
- Puffy Paint Recipe (find resource here!)
- White Glue
- Shaving Cream
- Food Coloring
- Scissors
- Brown Crayon, Colored Pencil, or Marker
- Hole Punch and Colored Paper (Optional)
Print Instructions:
1. Print out Ice Cream Template on heavy cardstock paper. One per child.
2. Print out blank page. One per child. This is where child will attach ice cream.
How to Complete Craft:
1. Color ice cream cone and cherry.
2. Cut out ice cream, cherry, and cone.
3. Glue on blank page as indicated.
4. Create puffy paint as indicated on recipe.
5. Add puffy paint on top of ice cream.
6. Optional: Use a hole punch to punch out dots for sprinkles and/or chocolate chips.
7. Add the cherry on top!
8. Once painted, project will require several hours to dry.
Tips:
- Some children may initially resist mixing the ingredients with their fingers.
- Allow them to use a spoon until he or she develops a tolerance.
- Some children may need to apply the mixture with a paint brush.
- Gently entice your child to use the mixture as finger paint.
- When dry the paint will have an elevated or puffy appearance.
